This is a great list! If you're taking any recommendations, I think Lakewood by Megan Giddings would fit perfectly here! It's a psychological horror with plenty of surreal elements.

3

ooh thank you!

2

Lakewood is so good!

2

Right?? It was such a good blend of horror and social commentary. I can't say too much here because I don't wanna spoil anyone, but god, did I feel bad for the main character 😭

2

There's no way I can respond efficiently without spoiling. Just know that I completely agree with you. đŸ«ąđŸ˜

Great list!! I always love finding new Black authored horror, I’m adding some of these to my TBR right away! I have a few recs for you too â˜ș On Sundays She Picked Flowers by Yah Yah Scholfield is a new release you might be interested in adding as well! It’s a great exploration of inter generational trauma, the legacy of slavery, and trying to heal from it. Catherine House by Elizabeth Thomas is a gothic/dark acedemia horror that is also well worth the read if you’re down for a slow burn plot. I really appreciated and respected the way it explores racism in academia, and the carefully manufactured exclusivity of Ivy League-style educational bodies.

thank you for these recs and for all of the info! will definitely look into these <3

I love this list!! My overlap is way too low. Will be treating your lists as secret quests from now on đŸ«¶

3

hahaha thank you!

2

this looks epic!! excited to read

2

Ooh! I didn't know we could make recs. If we (still) can, I think The Reformatory would also be a good fit!

2

always keen for recommendations! thank you!

Great List! Sooo many books, so little time

May I suggest adding The Girl in Red? It's a YA post-apocalyptic retelling of Little Red Riding hood featuring a POC FMC.

2

thanks for the rec! this list is specifically for Black authors writing Black characters, so just wanted to confirm that that’s the case for this book? i couldn’t find that info looking it up and noticed your comment says POC not Black :)

3

Thanks for the clarification! Upon further review, The Girl In Red is not a good candidate for this list - the author is not Black.

The MC is of mixed Black/white heritage FWIW, this figures into the story in several key ways.

2

thanks for letting me know!! still good to have the rec out there!

2

You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron is great! It is young adult though so not sure if that fits the list

2

ooh yes i’ve heard of this one! i’ll definitely check it out, thanks for the rec!
