Another fun popcorn thriller from Riley Sager. The alternating timelines between 1926 and modern day created a tense pacing where I kept wanting to read more.

Some red herrings were pretty obvious, but Sager pulled off several twists in the last 15-20% of the book. I appreciated that even though I figured out one of the concluding twists, there were a few more to be revealed, and they were unexpected.

The characters weren’t particularly appealing to me. They had their flaws, made their choices, and I wasn’t invested in any of them. I was more engaged in figuring out what happened on that island in 1926. That was the true mystery and the story delivered.

This book is fascinating and horrifying. Tsao has a very complex and horrific idea of what motherhood could be, especially in this alternate world where mothers birth a second mother who eats her original self and turns into a superhuman for the first five years of the child's life. However, for me, Tsao is so zoomed in on this lineage of mothers that I felt disappointed and disconnected from the broader concept. Especially with the ending chapter and that character's perspective, which I feel like is trying to push the opposite of what I'm complaining about. I just didn't feel it connect for me. Part of what I'm talking about is the fear of losing yourself in motherhood, in a pliable and selfless servant rather than a parental figure and your own person. Part of what I'm also talking about is postpartum depression, prepartum depression, parents with personality disorders, the shame of mental health or physical disability leeching into your child through your blood and skin and their lack of choice in you being their parent. The guilt the child will carry with them, regardless of how much you try to avoid that feeling for them. Another (smaller) part can be thought of the fear of what your body can do to you against your will when you're pregnant.

I also feel like the final twist of the book breaks my mind with Vivi. I feel wholly disconnected with her actions. It makes me so sad, which part of me started to stop expecting by the end of the book. I had so much beautiful hope for Vivi. I don't understand what Tsao is trying to show with that final chapter in Vivi's perspective when we end the book like that. No spoilers just... I love this book. I love it much more than expected, and all of my disappointments were unexpected and jarring. I don't think there's truly enough world building for this world and this kind of supposed biology. Part of me always thought we would pull away to talk about what something inhuman is happening to mothers but no! It's always just what Tsao says from the very beginning. Even with the ending, which I find weird.

Read this and talk with me about it!!

  • A thread just to vibe together

I know there's been a lot of feelings going around over the past few days, so in the spirit of building community (and because I'm at home today!), I wanted to offer a thread just to chat and vibe because I love the community here and I want it to be a place where people can just feel free to be themselves. SO!

Send me a heart and you will get:

ā¤ļø A compliment/shoutout/affirmation 🧔 A completely random question šŸ’› A completely random fact šŸ’š An encouragement or virtual hug (feel free to specific what you want encouragement for!) šŸ’™ A book recommendation (let me know your preferred genre) šŸ’œ A book-related discussion (will try and go off your currently reading or My Taste but if I don't know those books, may just be more of a general book-related topic)

    Gender Struggles :(

Hey y’all. So this may not be the right place to ask questions like this and I apologize in advance if this post annoys anyone, but i’ve been really struggling with my gender identity lately and I wanted to ask if yall had any advice? I know this isn’t a book related question but i know pb has a large queer community and this is an online space i feel safe in so please bear with me.

I’m AFAB but have started to express myself much more masculine and it makes me feel much more like my self. I don’t really know what this means for me and i’ve been thinking about things like this for years now but i’m not really sure where to start. Honestly with the situation i’m in transitioning feels so scary that I often just push down the feelings so I don’t have to think about. I’ve also thought about possibly being enby but i’m just not sure.

    For any trans people:

How did you realize you were trans?

How do you get through first telling people, especially in an environment where you’re well known already?

    What if i’m wrong?

    Help?

Thank you for any and all comments. Also if you have book recs where characters are figuring out their gender identity that would be awesome too.
