tldr: it's perfect ya yuri! it's sweet, it's fluffy, it's got amazing music references, the art style and coloring are to die for!! the translation (to me) reads seamless and honestly vibrant?? i think the vignette chapters work to power that vibrancy, both in terms of the words on the page and the overall pacing/tone of this story. so excited to see what's in store for aya and mitsuki!!!! i love green yuri!!
on a more personal note, i cried at the end of this volume from the sheer fact of my inner teenager feeling a huge sense of... relief? it's extremely tooth rotting fluffy and these girls just get to love sharing their passions with one another. their feelings about each other are muddied with friendship and crushing, but also they're supported by so many friends and family members (both found and blood related). they're not rushing into anything crazy, they're learning more about each other at their own paces and communication styles. not to be getting overly emotional about the green yuri in my 20's, but i remember absolutely dreaming of a manga like this as a middle and high schooler. i've always loved anime, growing up on saturday morning (or late night) Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z. my middle school library offered worn volumes of Naruto and i became obsessed, falling headfirst into manga and anime with a best friend i was in love with. but as i got older, i got so bored, disappointed, and disgusted with how many female characters were treated in anime and manga. my increasing awareness of feminism, my own experiences with misogyny and assault, and an intense internal battle with my sexuality (comphet is a bitch) led to me abandoning all of my favorite anime and manga. i don't mean to disparage manage as a whole, but i felt my passion for one of my favorite graphic novel styles wither into an intense wariness and sour taste. for many years, the most i would indulge was anything Pokemon or Studio Ghibli related. i only recently in the past year have started reading manga again and have been much more discerning and critical of what i read. and yet, i've found more gems than sour tastes left in my mouth like before. but nothing really hit me like this volume. the teenage me who couldn't ever stand the thought of being with a man compared to a woman, the teenage me who stayed up all night compiling playlists for all of my friends and crushes, the teenage me who could never find a book that showed what i yearned for so badly. green yuri forever 💚
Yea, I am talking about the hit early 2000's show LOST in 2026. I love this series and became a fan after watching a season 1 recap video from a youtuber (mikesmic if anyone's interested) a few years ago and immediately binged the entire show. Every time a new recap video comes out, I yearn to just abandon everything in my life and rewatch the entire series... But maybe I should try satiating that feeling with some books 📚
I would love to hear your recs for books with a large cast of diverse characters (bonus points if they're involved in a plane crash/stranded somewhere/on an island), themes of reality/mysticism/very slight theology or religion, probably best if this is a series... I'm also okay with getting into a series that has a controversial ending! Even if you haven't watched or know anything about LOST, I would love to hear your rec that fits in any of these!

While reading this novel, I've noticed a lot of French locations and imagery being presented so I wanted to do the diligence of looking some things up. I immediately sat up straighter at the image of this limestone prison! I'm reading the 🔗Penguin classics paperback, which has a detail of Phillipe Jacques de Loutherbourg's painting, Smugglers Landing in a Storm (I'll post other images below). I know the beats of this story and feel like this cover was really good imagery to pair with the story! While Loutherbourg didn't have a specific location named with this painting, the building does match in shape and construction similar enough to this prison that I think will become relevant again in the story. However, Dumas is giving a lot of imagery from early chapters of an almost idyllic French spring in the city of Marseille. I feel like the cover can help match the mood for the possible longer revisit to this prison, and how Dantes journey might heading towards. I love when cover artwork is this intentional and good at matching atmosphere within the text!

ah i'm tearing up :") for years i've been in horrible reading slumps and been beating myself up for never putting down my phone or looking away from screens to read. audiobooks have always been my comfort, and pb was the right community to not only make me want to read more but think about what i read more. i love talking with everyone on here, it feels both like old twitter and english class (two very nostalgic things for me) 💗

In the last week, I've seen a couple comments/reviews/etc that have noted the use of AI on PB, which feels so weird to me because PB advertises itself as an anti-AI site very specifically, so it just seems to clash against the very basic tenants of this app to begin with - especially when most people come here because we don't want AI driven recommendations or reviews.
So just as a very general reminder, the use of AI is destroying the environment at an unprecedented rate because of the electrical and water demands needed to manage the data centers (🔗article from MIT), and that impact is felt unevenly and in many countries that are not actually making up the lion's share of the usage (🔗article from UN). Additionally, AI has been found to lead to lower cognitive ability like critical thinking skill and brain development (🔗article from The Times) and psychosis in individuals who haven't displayed similar symptoms before (🔗NLM research article). Given that some of the benefits of reading are to develop cognitive ability and critical thinking, and since we all sort of need to live on this Earth to survive, all of this really seems maybe a little bit important and alarming to me!
To be honest, I know that posting this isn't going to stop people who are still using AI for basic everyday tasks or change their minds, but I just wanted to get it off my chest after seeing it several times recently. I know that a lot of companies are forcing people to use AI in their work, but when it comes to our hobbies, we have a choice to say no to AI, and PB especially has been a haven from the ubiquitous use of AI everywhere else.
EDIT: if you’re going through and downvoting all the anti-AI comments, how about you look at the links above and educate yourself on AI usage instead? Would be a better use of your time!!
EDIT 2: @vulpix also pointed out several very important points about AI use. This is my paraphrasing, but these are all @vulpix's research btw! First, research has shown how AI has encouraged violence against women and girls (🔗research here) by allowing for roleplaying of these scenarios, literally advising people to commit these acts, and agreeing with misogynistic stereotypes. Second, AI is actively racist in that it's built into the algorithms behind AI (🔗UN article), so when using it to make decisions, it's all based on human stereotypes, biases, and yes, racism, which obviously has real life implications. (This makes me think of that thing that happened when the Fable AI made a very racist comment that essentially blew up Fable...last year? The year before? I forget now.)
