Enjoyment: 3.0Quality: 4.0Characters: 2.0Plot: 4.0

In this dark and enchanting stand-alone fantasy from debut author Lynn Buchanan, discover a world centered around destructive, all-consuming monsters; the magical dolls designed to fight this force; and the artisans tasked with creating demon-slaying dolls. A touch cozy fantasy and a touch horror, The Dollmakers is perfect for fans of Studio Ghibli films, the works of TJ Klune and Travis Baldree, and readers of Juniper & Thorn and The Goblin Emperor . In the country called One, dollmakers are vital members of the community. An artisan’s doll is the height of society’s accomplishments, while a guard’s doll is the only thing standing between the people of One and the vicious, cobbled monstrosities that will tear apart any structure—living or dead, inanimate or otherwise—to add to their horde. Apprentice Shean of Pearl is a brilliant dollmaker. With her clever dolls, she intends to outsmart and destroy the Shod, once and for all—a destiny she’s worked her whole life toward accomplishing. But when the time comes for her dolls to be licensed, she’s told her work is too beautiful and delicate to fight. A statement that wounds and infuriates her; the Shod killed everyone she loved. How could her fate be anything but fighting them? In an attempt to help her see a new path for herself, Shean’s mentor sends her on a journey to the remote village called Web, urging her to glean some wisdom from Ikiisa, a reclusive and well-respected guard dollmaker. But Shean has another if she can convince the village of Web of her talents, the Licensor Guild will have to reconsider and grant her a guard’s license. And what better way to convince them than challenging Ikiisa and instating herself as the official dollmaker of Web? Once she’s done that, proving her dolls’ worth in the fight against the Shod will be simple. As simple, that is, as calling the Shod to Web...

There is MUCH to be excited about with this cozy debut fantasy, which I couldn't wait to get my hands on. Still, for credential purposes, Lynn Buchanan was a student of Brandon Sanderson and currently works for him as an art director at Dragonsteel Entertainment, assisting with creative writing courses—this background offers an assured reading experience that doesn't feel like a debut at all.

In the country called One, dollmakers are vital members of the community, and being an artisan of a doll is the highest accomplishment in society. It's this quest that the main character is on with an anti-hero in the lead that will grow as the story moves along.

Shean is an ambitious and short-tempered prodigy in her early twenties, already renowned as one of the most talented dollmakers in her country. Her clever dolls will give you M3GAN vibes as they wink and appear to have more free will, not to mention they are breathtaking in every way.

Instead of receiving licensing for her dolls at the required induction ceremony, she is told that her work is too beautiful to be used for fighting. Her dolls are considered mere art, not protectors against the monsters that killed her family.

It’s a devastating and infuriating loss for the time she has put in. Still, Shean's determination to prove everyone wrong will lead to a fruitful journey for the reader and offer a unique coming-of-age story enveloping her in guidance from an incredible mentor navigating her traumas, offering readers a beautifully crafted female friendship and unexpected adventures.

This dark fairy tale is filled with rich, world-building unique magic systems. I can see this ticking all the boxes for our T. Kingfisher fans.

My only regret is that I do not have the finished copy. It has gorgeous illustrations that took my breath away from the interior sneak peeks for reviewers. I would buy a copy of this one for your shelves!

The Dollmakers has a unique, magical concept but is seemingly left unfinished. There is no real resolution to the story, so readers are left wondering what comes next? I adore the fairytale feel of this book, but unfortunately that is not enough to push it higher than 3 stars. If you are looking for a loveable main character, this is not the book for you. Shean is genuinely terrible. A bratty teenager who literally threatens to end the world when she doesn’t get her way. And when she does just that, she has next to no consequences for her actions! It serves to give a good message to those who read it but god did I hate reading her POVs. If another book is written I will definitely read it because I want to know more about how this story gets resolved! But as it stands, I am disappointed in such a good story having so many plot lines left unresolved.
