Murder is Binding (Booktown Mystery, #1)

Lorna Barrett

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

The streets of Stoneham, New Hampshire, are lined with bookstores...and paved with murder. When she moved to Stoneham, city slicker Tricia Miles met nothing but friendly faces. And when she opened her mystery bookstore, she met friendly competition. But when she finds Doris Gleason dead in her own cookbook store, killed by a carving knife, the atmosphere seems more cutthroat than cordial. Someone wanted to get their hands on the rare cookbook that Doris had recently purchased-and the locals think that someone is Tricia. To clear her name, Tricia will have to take a page out of one of her own mysteries-and hunt down someone who isn't killing by the book.

I'm not going to lie, my interest in the book, and the entire series, waned when the author used the word retarded to describe a character with Down syndrome. If the book had been written 30 years ago I'd be able to overlook it as it was the norm at that time, but as the book was published in 2008 I was unhappily surprised at the word usage.

Continuity issues bug me. On page 131, the main character did not recognize a police officer she had previously met on page 123, just a few hours earlier.

I'm 62% done and I still don't know who did it but I have a suspicious feeling. I like it when an author gives you several different viable options for possible bad guys which Barrett has definitely done here.

Overall I ended up liking it more than I thought I would. I'll probably go ahead and read the next book in the series as well.
