Morgenstjernen

Disappointing. The prose is good, but Knausgård seems to be ashamed of the ideas he's presenting and find fascinating, to the point where most of the supernatural stuff happens in a bad essay written in the voice of one of the characters, a place where Knausgård can dive into and have thoughts about the underworld and mythology and what happens after we die without committing to a supernatural plot or a character arc. He knows how to put a sentence together, and I was rarely outright bored (though I was frustrated), but this felt more like a beginning with a ton of threads that never really connect (though I had the thought that Ole was the killer of the satanic band and that this band somehow released this evil into the world; not that I actually care that much, but I felt there's a lot of threads that could've been/are connected in interesting way, but it never fully comes together). And the whole "we live our little lives while evil spreads"-theme is present, but I never really felt it emotionally. This whole book is full of ideas Knausgård could've done more with but doesn't; it feels half-baked, even as it's full of interesting stuff. Worth reading if you think Knausgård's already fascinating, but not really if you just think the plot and ideas sound interesting. There are better stories out there with similar plots and ideas, the HBO-series "The Leftovers" being one of them (especially in its second season, which Morgenstjernen reminded me of).
