Call the Midwife' is a most extraordinary book and should be required reading of all students of midwifery, nursing, sociology and modern history. It tells of the experiences of a young trainee midwife in the East End of London in the 1950's and is a graphic portrayal of the quite appalling conditions that the East Enders endured.

This was an interesting look into the lives of midwives in London's slums in the 1950's. Jennifer Worth worked at Nonnatus House with the nuns of St. Nonnatus, serving the residents of London's slums and portrays her work with humor and compassion for the people she worked with as well as her patients. Worth was a sheltered middle class nurse who experienced things she had never seen before, such as prostitutes, rough living and the camraderie of these communities in which many of the residents struggled from day to day to make a living while still providing a welcoming home for their families. I really enjoyed the stories and the often funny, compassionate way that they were narrated.
