The Magic of Recluce (The Saga of Recluce, #1)

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Young Lerris is dissatisfied with his life and trade, and yearns to find a place in the world better suited to his skills and temperament. But in Recluce a change in circumstances means taking one of two options: permanent exile from Recluce or the dangergeld, a complex, rule-laden wanderjahr in the lands beyond Recluce, with the aim of learning how the world works and what his place in it might be. Many do not survive. Lerris chooses dangergeld. When Lerris is sent into intensive training for his quest, it soon becomes clear that he has a natural talent for magic. And he will need magic in the lands beyond, where the power of the Chaos Wizards reigns unchecked. Though it goes against all of his instincts, Lerris must learn to use his powers in an orderly way before his wanderjahr, or fall prey to Chaos.

If you were looking for a story about being bored all the time, onomatopoeias, and misogyny, then look no further than The Magic of Recluce. Lerris is a perfect example of "Only bored people get bored." I'm sure there's a word count somewhere that counts how many times he says he's bored, something being boring or that he thinks about how bored he is. It's out of control. And speaking of things that are out of control, why can't this author just paint a picture with words as opposed to us getting EVERY. SINGLE. SOUND. The amount of times that his pony whinneys or thunk/thwack/crash, even the sound of the wind... That's almost enough to DNF right there. And then there's the objectification of almost every single woman he comes across. How many times he calls women bitches. That he comments on their figures and busts. How attractive their faces are. The magic system had so much potential and maybe it gets better, but the book wasn't intriguing enough for me to try the rest of the series. Just disappointing.
