Bridget Jones’s Diary meets Americanah in this disarmingly honest, boldly political, and truly inclusive novel that will speak to anyone who has gone looking for love and found something very different in its place.Queenie Jenkins is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle class peers. After a messy break up from her long-term white boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places…including several hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth.As Queenie careens from one questionable decision to another, she finds herself wondering, “What are you doing? Why are you doing it? Who do you want to be?”—all of the questions today’s woman must face in a world trying to answer them for her..

I think towards the end of the book, I became more invested in what was going on. For the first half or so, I didn't feel attached at all and wasn't really sure what the plot was. The plot line of Queenie's mental health struggles gave the book more of a direction and I think there were some great messages in there!

I...did not enjoy this book. Maybe it was meant to be very frustrating, seeing the heroine process her childhood trauma through sexual escapades with many loser men, and seeing the heroine be a shit ass friend to ALL of her friends (never inquiring about their lives, never catching onto when they were going through tough stuff!). I'm relieved the heroine mildly redeems herself by the end of the story, but ultimately, it takes way too long and the difference isn't palpable :/

i did appreciate reading about a Black-british heroine in this "rom com" of sorts. It was more interesting than reading about Bridget Jones, for sure!
