Gilead (Gilead, #1)

Marilynne Robinson

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Nearly 25 years after Housekeeping, Marilynne Robinson returns with an intimate tale of three generations, from the Civil War to the 20th century: a story about fathers and sons and the spiritual battles that still rage at America's heart. In the words of Kirkus, it is a novel "as big as a nation, as quiet as thought, and moving as prayer. Matchless and towering." GILEAD tells the story of America and will break your heart.

    I absolutely loved this book!!!

It was a book group choice, and when I first started it I thought it was going to be a slog. I regretted very soon starting so late in the month, because this is a book I wanted to take my time with!
Gilead was this gorgeously written journal/letter from an old dying man to his young son, full of the wisdom, truths, and love he has to give. I wanted to have a highlighter on hand, but it would have run dry probably about halfway! This is a book I plan to purchase, so that in the future when I pour over the pages and leisure my way through, I can underline to my heart's content!

Full of beautiful writing and turns of phrase, I found myself coming across a sentence on one page that would strike a strong chord of familiarity and elation, as I read words that clearly articulated feelings and thoughts I've never been able to adequately express. And then just a page or two later I would read and re-read a sentence, astounded at the novel idea and deep blooming curiosity of a concept or point of view I'd never thought of before.
Each of these moments were happening again and again across the pages, and these mixed in with some dry humor and superb prose made me keep turning the pages and love this book. Those moments are rare for me, and I truly enjoy coming across them--it's a major reason why I read.

I'm not sure what more to say other than I plan to re-read this book many more times in my life, and it will probably be a go-to recommendation for awhile too!
