This isn't MY list. These are the foundational texts of the Western Canon. Up until the early 1900s, these were unquestionably part of any educated person's background. Austen, Lewis, Twain, James, Sayers, Tolkien....what do you think they grew up reading that informed the genius works they created? Their masterpieces didn't materialize out of thin air. This list is by no means comprehensive, but you'll be off to a solid start.

This is a list of all books and poems from the chapter quotes. Let's dive into all the supporting texts for fun and for a deeper understanding of the themes. I've done my best for picking books that match, but some of these are either hard to get ahold of or swamped with other stuff. In the comments I'll be making a list of the source material you can access for free without worrying about the exact book. This list will be updated as I read!

I have been a long-time fan of Arthurian lit, to the point that I actually took two separate classes in University that covered themes of Arthurian tales, which also increased my library. These are books I actively own, and most of which I have read or at least used in my writing on the Arthurian Age. I do wish I could make comments on the books themselves, as several of these require a little explanation, but if you have any questions, feel free to leave questions or other book suggestions.

(Almost) all books cited to be a part of the gothic genre, or having a part in creating the gothic genre (including the supernatural, romantic, and pre- & -post subgenres), in H.P Lovecraft's 28,000-word essay, “Supernatural Horror in Literature,” which is mostly based on Edith Birkhead's historical study, The Tale of Terror.

These novels, stories, plays, and poems are “fertile in the element of the weird.”
