Recs if you like The Long Earth...
But WAIT. There’s hope. ✨FICTION✨
Straight from the Solarpunk Manifesto, “We are solarpunks because the only other options are denial or despair.”
What if there’s more to our future? What if we were optimistic?
Below are the fiction books that have made it to O.E. Tearmann’s Open List of Positive and Hopeful Futures
I’ll make another list for the nonfiction and for the anthologies. Feel free to suggest any recs!
Books That Break the Universe
hold on tight as we explore a myriad of alternate realities and multiverses
Stars on a Pedestal
The most comprehensive list of award winning sci-fi and fantasy novels. The books on this list have won either 1 or multiple awards out of the Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy, Locus Sci-Fi, Locus Fantasy, goodreads Choice Fantasy, or goodreads Science Fiction Awards.
Epic space adventures!
Epic space adventures for when you just need to leave earth for a while
Relatable Robots
Books with robots and robot-adjacent characters that I can't stop thinking about. Series are represented by the book I think best fits this list. Most of these books have LGBT+ characters, but there may be exceptions!
A Day in the Life, Tomorrow Not Guaranteed
Books featuring a day in the life for characters in a high-stress, high-stakes environment where no matter how bad things get, intense fear won't put food on the table. Every day could be your last, but it's not over yet, so...
The general vibe of this list is to collect books which, rather than changing the world through a heroic perfect storm, involve a slice-of-life portrayal of a character's daily journey through a rather dangerous path.
Terry Pratchett's Non-Discworld Works
A list of all of Sir Terry Pratchett's fiction across all genres (collabs included). This explicitly excludes the incredible works of Discworld, which can be tracked through the Universe Quest; however, short story collections that include Discworld materials are still included here for completion's sake. All of the following, excepting A Slip of the Keyboard, are fictional works.
Science Fiction stories to get your teeth into
My recommended science fiction stories (stand-alone and series) that I think are worth giving a go.
The Long Earth Series
A collection of the Long Earth books, co-written by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter. Also included: A Blink of the Screen, which contains the original short story, "The High Meggas," an initial attempt that predates the Discworld series. Books 4 and 5 of the final series were published posthumously with Stephen Baxter completing the novels. "The Long Earth" is a multi-POV part-sci-fi part-travelogue series about human society being shaken and uprooted altogether by the discovery of a seemingly endless number of alternative-dimension Earths, and the ability to freely step between them.
