The Ice (The Bound and the Broken, #3.5)

Ryan Cahill

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

In Epheria, you are the predators. Here, you are the prey. Almost four hundred years have passed since the fall of The Order. Four hundred years since the empire rose. Four hundred years since the last dragon egg hatched. In the icy wasteland of Valacia, Aeson Virandr searches for the one thing that could turn the tide of hope. But there is a reason no soul has ever returned from Valacia. Hope comes at a cost, one that can only be paid in blood. * this is a companion novella to The Bound and The Broken series, not a standalone novella. Previous books in the series should be read first.*

I was provided an ARC of The Ice for an honest review.

Just when I thought that I couldn't love this series more, The Ice proved me wrong. Ryan Cahill has a way of creating novellas that are not simple companion novels. They provide a lot of depth to both the journey The Bound and The Broken has taken us on and insight into the characters that deserve some of the spotlight.

With The Ice, we are presented with the events that started it all. The treacherous path that Aeson Virandr must walk to find the hope he needs to fuel the rebellion. Within the first 3 books of the series, we only see Aeson as someone who is willing to sacrifice anything to further his cause and while we do get more of that in this novella, we also see him for who he truly is: a broken man desperately trying to protect those he loves while carrying the burden of those he feels he has failed.

Ryan Cahill has come a long way since book one and it shows here. For something that is as short as The Ice is, I feel that we were given just as much worldbuilding, emotion, and introspection as the behemoth of a book Of War and Ruin. Unfortunately, I now have to wait to get more of this world, but good things are worth waiting for. With each new entry into the series, The Bound and the Broken solidifies its spot as one of the best epic fantasies out now.
