Tess Gerritsen

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

From New York Times bestseller Tess Gerritsen and acclaimed thriller writer Gary Braver comes a sexy murder mystery about a reckless affair and dangerous secrets. Taryn Moore is young, beautiful and brilliant...so why would she kill herself? When Detective Frankie Loomis arrives on the scene to investigate the girl's fatal plunge from her apartment balcony, she knows in her gut there's more to the story, especially after the autopsy reveals that the college senior was pregnant. It could be reason enough for suicide-or a motive for murder. To English professor Jack Dorian, Taryn was the ultimate fantasy: intelligent, adoring, and completely off limits. But there was also a dark side to Taryn, a dangerous streak that threatened those she turned her affections to--including Jack. And now that she's dead, his problems are just beginning. After Frankie uncovers a trove of sordid secrets, it becomes clear that Jack may know the truth. He is guilty of deception, but is he capable of cold-blooded murder?

This book left a bad taste in my mouth. There were maybe only a couple chapters where I was legitimately curiosity to find out how it all played out, but the rest felt like filler just walking the reader through the obvious and predictable. Every major character was also unlikeable which can be done well but just is never my personal preference, and the plot wasn't interesting enough to make up for it.

I'd actually have left this at 2 stars if not for a review I saw from a student of Gary Braver (Goshgarian) that revealed that this reads almost like a weird autobiography/fantasy?? He is an English professor that has historically assigned his students to read his own books, including ones featuring professor/student affairs, and also has other accusations against him of inappropriate behavior with students. And he has now co-written a book again about a professor/student affair (that actually takes place in the same region as he teaches in), where that professor similarly assigns readings on teacher/student affairs, but in which the involved student is murdered. Uh... Yikes. Now, this may not be true, but I believe it enough to knock it down another star because just the chance that it is is so GROSS. Also, Tess Gerritsen did respond to the review in question and added that the concept "began" as her idea, and said the focus of the book is the "brilliant older female detective" ...which was funny to me because firstly it was not a denial of the actual personal accusations against her co-author, and secondly I found the detective in question completely lackluster and frankly very boring.
