First of all, I would like to say that I love a duel POV book, seeing the perspective of the mmc always has me giggling and kicking my feet. Ryker is such a sweet guy (although I was pissed at him in the beginning for hiding from Kya). Ryker is nothing but a big softy, he isn't the typical brooding dark man I thought he would be before I started reading. Kya is badass. I love that she was already trained to fight and can kick ass before she met Ryker. I'm not a huge fan of characters instantly gaining power, and you can see that Kya has worked hard to become stronger as the story progresses. I love the nickname little gem and shadow, I thought that was so cute. The slow burn was exciting, I could feel the sexual tension through the screen and it really kept my attention.
There are a lot of similarities in this book that are comparable to other romantasy books (ex. mmc is a shadow wielder, has wings, and some of the plot is similar to other popular books). I am excited about how A.N. Claudle will differentiate her series from other romantasy series. Although this book has a "dark" fantasy romance tag, I wouldn't consider it dark. Maybe in the second book, we will see more of the dark side of this romantasy. I also did not feel too much emotional connections to the characters, but as I have been mentioning throughout this review it is the first book and I might get more attached as the series continues. I'm excited to read the next book.
