All her life, Spensa's dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she's a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing. The rumors of his cowardice are true—he deserted his flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them. Spensa is sure that there's more to the story. And she's sure that whatever happened to her father in his starship could happen to her. When she made it outside the protective shell of her planet, she heard the stars—and it was terrifying. Everything Spensa has been taught about her world is a lie. But Spensa also discovered a few other things about herself—and she'll travel to the end of the galaxy to save humankind if she needs to.

This man really knows how to write the type of books I absolutely adore.

This was an interesting sequel because it felt so different to the first and yet similar. I love how it dealt with such large themes, especially the necessity of perspective shifts to understand others. But was not preach-y, it was just a part of the world and character growth.

Keeping this as spoiler free as possible.

This book is confusing. It’s a solid, enjoyable read, which expanded the cytoverse in a major way and has some fantastic character and plot beats. Yet I feel it’s flawed as a sequel to Skyward, given how it follows on from the ending of that story. I can understand why the story continued how it did, and the twists and turns it takes make that shift worth it. But at the same time, I can’t help but feel that something was missing. As well, the book is world building heavy for the most part - which is interesting and necessary for what Sanderson is setting up - but at the same time, undermines the pacing of this individual book.

Overall, this is a really enjoyable continuation of Skyward, even if it goes in a seemingly radical new direction. It’s a great time, with fantastic characters and beats, but it just might take a while to get there.
