Someday, Maybe

Someday, Maybe

Onyi Nwabineli

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

A stunning and witty debut novel about a young woman’s emotional journey through unimaginable loss, pulled along by her tight-knit Nigerian family, a posse of new friends, and the love and laughter she shared with her husband. Onyi Nwabineli is a fresh new voice for fans of Yaa Gyasi, Queenie and I May Destroy You. Here are three things you should know about my husband: 1. He was the great love of my life despite his penchant for going incommunicado. 2. He was, as far as I and everyone else could tell, perfectly happy. Which is significant because… 3. On New Year’s Eve, he committed suicide. And here is one thing you should know about me: 1. I found him. Bonus fact: No. I am not okay.

I had really high hopes for this book, but was left with absolutely none by 50%. The book was so hard to get into at first, the beginning chapters just dragged on and I couldn’t really get a sense of the actual story. By the middle of the book, I absolutely hated the character. Her countless efforts to STAY wallowing in grief and not accept the help and advice from her family and friends was just not it for me. She came to be unbelievably ungrateful of all the efforts her family made to see that she wasn’t alone in her grief, angering me even further. Also, as an eldest sibling who also does what she can to protect her younger sibling, I hated how she treated her older sister, Gloria. I was absolutely heartbroken for the sister that tried everything in her power to rid her grief-stricken sibling of stresses/problems. And the ending of the book honestly feels so thrown together - the entire book felt like it was leading towards the moment she finally met with her MIL & the result was just trash.

I understand, and yet do not fully understand, that grief is messy. I know you cannot expect any person to magically be remedied in a certain amount of time. But the fact that this character realized how bad she had gotten, and did nothing to help herself was honestly the end of this book for me. Her family helped and provided countless resources for her, yet she found aggravating excuses to evade each and every one of them. This wasn’t the book for me.
