I feel like I should maybe have been better for prepared for what this book was going to be considering all the warning signs. But it had some good reviews and it sounded like it would be a fun and quick read. And yet...I just did not care for this book.

I think the story, while not anything especially new or thrilling, was decent enough. At the very least it was pretty fast paced. The characters were probably the main problem for me, as they felt like cliches of the romance genre. Alpha male, heroine who is outwardly strong and yet caves to pretty much anything the hero wants. It's just not a dynamic I find interesting. I guess the excuse here would be that it's set in the 1700s, but still...this is fiction. There is no need to stick so strictly to the facts unless that is what you want to do with the story.

I also didn't really care for having it set from different perspectives. The story is told mostly from both the perspective of the main male and female characters. I tend not to be a fan of this kind of storytelling because it reveals too much, leaving the reader knowing exactly how everyone is feeling, I think it can be a lot more interesting when there is more left open to interpretation, both for the characters you're reading about, and for the reader.

Overall this book just didn't consist of a story or characters that were all that appealing to me, despite it initially piquing my interest.
