Okay, I thought I would cry but I didn't... I guess my emotions are just damaged. But that doesn't mean I wasn't heartbroken... Damn, Miss Nowlin why did you write this?

I considered this as a light reading, 'cause it's not like the other books (i read a lot of fantasy and mystery) in which I have to think and contemplate what's gonna happen next, those books are fun but it's tiring me out lately. So I'm glad I found this book, it made my reading cycle balanced... While reading, I just go with the flow without thinking about stuff, just reading and chillin'.

Until I got the last like, 5 chapters! That's why Romeo and Juliet were mentioned earlier in this book. Damn that easter egg... Anyways, I like this book!! ♥️

If He Had Been With Me - a classic high school romance story that will have you reminiscing about the past.

The story follows the life of Autumn and Phineas, who are childhood best friends and neighbours. This, what seems like, an inseparable duo begin to grow a part as they grow older causing concern and questions. After a heartbreak, they slowly begin to reconnect only for their growth together to be cut short by tragedy. How incredibly heartbreaking.

If He Had Been With Me is straight out of every high schoolers life story. There are challenges throughout this storyline that a majority of readers can relate to while going to school. Most things are confusing at that age, especially when dealing with young love, family struggles and even struggles with your own self. This novel does a great job of pulling you in and emphazing with the character and what they are going through. The reader can fully understand her frustrations, her concerns, her sadness and even her happiness. This book takes you on a roller coaster of emotions. Safe to say I was emotionally connected to these characters.

Also, I love when a book’s first chapter is the tragic ending. Bold of you to tell me what happens. Not only do I end up falling in love with the story and it completely wipes all memory of the first chapter, we get to just before the end and my heart if so filled with joy, I have a flashback of the first chapter, and my emotions start to fall apart, just before they are destroyed. It’s very interesting.

This book felt so simple, and fast paced, but it really did pack-a-punch with its contents. I glad I didn’t read this until now, because now I don’t have to wait to read If Only I Had Told Her. Off to do that. K bye.

Let me know who on earth hyped this book, because we need to talk.
Don't get me wrong, this book was the authentic teen experience every YA girl needs. The way in which the author addresses several issues in one teen book is quite perfect, however I'd wish they were explored in detail. Divorce, mental health, eating disorders were all outlined, but it was let go almost instantly to keep the story going, as if it were some forgotten afterthought.
I love how this took me back to right when I was a teen with all its angsty drama. I remember having a phase similar to Autumn's tiara phase (except mine was eyeliner) and yes although it seems absolutely ridiculous as an adult, this was us "expressing ourselves" as teens. The characters, although unlikable were nevertheless relatable. But since majority of the story revolved around Autumn, they came off as one dimensional and shallow.
I knew what I was expecting at the end, but the journey to get there was ever-so-boring, which ruined the book pace wise for me. There was no heartclenching, gutwrenching moment for me. It was an "oh." And that was it.
For those who appreciate character-driven stories and a deep exploration of the teenage psyche, this book is worth a read. If not, you're not missing out on much.
