The Dry Heart

The Dry Heart

Natalia Ginzburg

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

The Dry Heart begins and ends with the matter-of-fact pronouncement: “I shot him between the eyes.” As the tale—a plunge into the chilly waters of loneliness, desperation, and bitterness—proceeds, the narrator’s murder of her flighty husband takes on a certain logical inevitability. Stripped of any preciousness or sentimentality, Natalia Ginzburg’s writing here is white-hot, tempered by rage. She transforms the unhappy tale of an ordinary dull marriage into a rich psychological thriller that seems to beg the question: why don’t more wives kill their husbands?

#spookathon Read a book with red on the cover

This was a great short read. I recommend it. It was a crazy ride to get to the end but I really did enjoy it. The story was short and simply yet long and complicated.

    SPOILERS:
These two people meet and the man seems to like the woman more than she likes him. She leaves and he doesnt contact her. She comes back and he doesnt contact her. When they finally meet again the same thing happens but in reverse. She loves him but he doesnt love her. They get married because apparently she has enough love for the both of them. He is and continues to have an affair with a married woman. He puts zero effort into the relationship and doesnt change at all. Of course they bring a child into this mess. He eventually decides it's time to split up. The woman goes on holiday with the child. The child dies so the mourning brings them together. They eventually go back to the old ways and the woman realizes nothing is going to change. She decides to kill him then starts to write a letter explaining why.
