A hidden truth. Mortal enemies. Doomed love. Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki, a descendant of dragons whose greatest defense is her secret ability to shift into human form. Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away;if it dies she will be left as a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy. Mythical powers and breathtaking romance ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide.

I remember now why I was a little meh on this the first time I read it. I actually really like the plot. It's telling that years and years after reading this book, I STILL remembered the plot. Not all the details, but I remembered the basic plot. (Sometimes I can't remember the plot of a book I just read...)

It's really like 3 stars in terms of how much I enjoyed it, but since it's YA and since it was written in 2010, I'm willing to give it a little bump because I actually think a sixteen year old would love this.

But this is VERY typical 2010s YA and falls on too many cliches and overdone tropes. The heroine is sUpEr SpEcIaL uNiQuE oNe Of A kInD. Like, the love interest even says to her, "You're not like other girls." Which is an automatic eyeroll. And again, it falls into the cliches. The love interest doesn't date, but ooooh the protagonist is ~special. Then throw in the really eyerolling trope where the most popular girl in school likes him and thinks she's can bully other girls into staying away from him even though he has NO INTEREST IN DATING HER. But no, it doesn't end there when she bullies the protagonist, she turns around and cries and says the protagonist was bullying HER and everyone believes her. -insert eyeroll here-

Unsurprisingly, the romance is underdeveloped. The main character and the love interested are really drawn to each other, and it does actually make sense. But they're declaring love for each other when we BARELY get any real interactions between them. Of course, 16 year olds don't need to develop their romance to declare their love. So I'm not THAT bothered by it.

Glad I reread it before jumping into Vanish. But I'm excited to actually continue this series that I started so long ago.
