A legend among sci-fi readers, C. J. Cherryh's Union-Alliance novels, while separate and complete in themselves, are part of a much larger tapestry—a future history spanning 5,000 years of human civilization. A blockbuster space opera of the rebellion between Earth and its far-flung colonies, it is a classic science fiction masterwork.

Downbelow Station was one of those books I thought I would love. The premise sounds really cool and it starts a really expansive series - but the execution just wasn't that great to me. For something that is so epic in scope, you get really bogged down in the details and the daily lives of the characters. Don't get me wrong - I really liked the characters and how in depth we got to be with them, but I felt like it was to the detriment of the action. This book moved slow, and the 426 pages that it was felt like a slog. I enjoyed the overall plot and themes, but it was just so hard to get through.
Also this edition was kind of riddled with misprints, grammatical errors and spelling mistakes that really threw me out of the narrative.
