Recs if you like Fever Dream...

Horror books written by Latin American authors.

This list was a winner of the Q1 2026 Community Voting event. To participate in the Side Quest, please follow the link pinned in the comments.

I am planning on keeping this list alive and will be adding more recommendations as I find them. Thank you everyone for nominating and voting for the list to be made into a Side Quest!

Fantasy, sci-fi, & horror translated into English.

Shorter books (under 200 pages) that are part of at least one quest. Many are also in the public domain, making them easily accessible when you want to grind for that next badge.

Books that are atmospheric, emotionally unsettling, beautifully written, a little weird, and linger long after you finish them.

Not all collections hold things you can touch. This one holds worlds that breathe, selves that dissolve, and realities that refuse to hold their shape. These are the fictions that live on the edge of what language can contain - and sometimes just beyond. Admission is free, through entry requires a signed waiver: the curator cannot be held responsible for any transformations that occur upon your exit. We welcome specimen recommendations!

Horror novellas under 200 pgs. Bite size scary reads for spooky season. These span the horror spectrum from psychological horror to gory, body horror to gothic ghosties and more. Let me know what else I should add!

“lynchian” is an over-prescribed pill, so i’m not going to assign such a label to any of these books. still, this selection reflects works that are in some way evocative of the work of master artist and filmmaker david lynch.

Recs are from r horrorlit. I have not read them, but thought it would be a fun concept for you and me.

(let me know if any suggestions are egregious)

tangled narratives and re-formed genres sprouting from the toxic ground of colonialism

Horror books with a page count of 200 pages or less.

Before we started defining novellas by word count, they were defined as being any book less than 200 pages. Source: my Analysis of Short Stories & Literature professor in community college. I loved that class. But he loved James Joyce. So, ymmv, I guess.

Fiction has always been where truth hides. Across horror, thriller, literary fiction, fantasy & mystery every book on this list has something to say about power, who holds it, who destroys it, and how it reproduces itself.

Horror books written by women where a female MC is "going through something" and it's (mostly) society's fault. Others might think she's going crazy, or seeing things that aren't really there... But is she, really?

These books explore the real horrors women have to face in society through the storytelling conventions of the horror genre.

Novellas, shorter books, and stories that are a decent bite of literature and a full meal despite being compact. Like a burrito on a commute to work. AKA my full novella master list.

A starter pack for literary fiction from Argentina, plus a handful of modern picks.

Grotesque, visceral, and boldly unsettling horror by Latin American women! // Shelf is a WIP, recommendations are welcomed! ✍️

Un recopilatorio de mis libros favoritos escritos por mujeres latinoamericanos, abordando de todo un poco, terror, drama, ficción, crítica política, naturaleza, etc.

winners, shortlist and longlist (this will be a very long list indeed). complete from 2016-2026

my favorite genre. elvia wilk’s essay is the best on what this genre is, but here’s an excerpt: “Weird knowledge does not deny the capacity of the human mind and body to produce knowledge, but it does not reduce the world to human subject experience either. Unlike science fiction—in which there is a rational explanation for everything—and fantasy—where magic explains it all—weirdness hovers between poles of explainability.”
