"She's Going Through Something"

Horror books written by women where a female MC is "going through something" and it's (mostly) society's fault. Others might think she's going crazy, or seeing things that aren't really there... But is she, really?

These books explore the real horrors women have to face in society through the storytelling conventions of the horror genre.

Thank you for the rec! After looking into this book and thinking it over, I think I will limit this list to books written by women. It is important for me to give a voice to authors that are talking about these kinds of experiences directly, I will edit the description to include this!

Thank you! This is one of my favourite "tropes" in horror đŸ€

Horror is not my thing usually but I love this list’s premise! Which of these is beginner friendly?

I'd say that depends a bit on what kind of horror elements you think you'd be most comfortable with đŸ€” Is there anything specific you'd like to avoid, like gore or sexual violence, for example?

I love that when reading the title and description of this list, my first thought was The Vegetarian, and then of course it is included! Great list! I've read four of these and enjoyed every one so perhaps this is a great subgenre for me 👀

Though that's not including The Yellow Wall-Paper, which I'm pretty sure I read in high school. I should do a reread--I'm guessing it will hit a lot harder as an adult!

It was very interesting to see a take on this topic written before current times, it's a very quick read so I do recommend you give it a reread at some point!

I love this subgenre, and horror that is used to explore societal issues in general. Please do come back if you find some books to suggest as you continue to read more horror! I would love to find more books from this subgenre to read myself as well 😁

Same!! I'm sure I've read others that would be good fits, though I can't think of anything at the moment. Will report back if/when I do!
