Chron as a list aint gunna work, but essentially I believe Ralph Waldo Emerson to be the grandsire (pitamaha) of American Letters. Following him, taking one of his elements, are the American Romantics: Hawthorne, Melville, Poe, and later Henry James, with Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman rounding out the 19th century, or first full century of the United States' existence.
