I read mostly in English, but want to get back into the German book market. This is popular 21st century literary fiction written by German (speaking) women. You might also like this if you're learning the language and want to start reading books in German.

I know there has been a lot of discourse about whether the author was entitled to write that story but I think 22 Bahnen is one of the most popular German books recently
Yes, thanks for pointing it out. The book is definitely worth a mention because of it's popularity. I unfortunately didn't like it and wasn't sure if I want to include it in the list. Have you read it? What did you think?
I have because I had a trial of a German audiobook app and it was highly recommended there. It definitely wasn't the worst book I'd ever read but it definitely feels like poverty written by someone who doesn't really understand it.
I'm still trying to find my footing with finding German language books I really enjoy rather than just reading books that have been translated into German.
Oh yes it's so hard, because all the books I want to read in my genre are English and I don't see why I should read them in German... But then I rarely read anything in German, so I made a list. Hopefully I'll read them and don't just go back to the genre books :)
