I am a former student of Japanese society and culture, and I'm tired of dudebros peddling Murakami to me. Japan's literary landscape has often been male-dominated and steeped in patriarchy - and yet, there has been an emergent wave of women's fiction coming from Japan that is resonating with women globally. This list spotlights Japanese female authors whose creative works seek to challenge societal norms or to stir converstation about controversial/political critique.
