They'll dance thee, and sing thee to sleep

Poets from the Romantic Era that used the Volksliedton/Volksliedstrophe for their poetry. For a poem to be classified as Volksliedstrophe they need to have the following four characteristics:

  • iambic trimeter with any desired number of unstressed syllables (-> Senkungsfreiheit)
  • four lines per verse
  • alternating cadences
  • crossed rhyme (abab) or half crossed rhyme (xaxa) If not all characteristics are met, the poem is categorised as Volksliedton.

I'm not really a poem reader but this is such a cute idea for a list! ❀

Thanks! <3 I spent a considerable amount of time analysing this type of poems in secondary school and have loved them ever since ^^

Oh, that's cool! I don't have too fond memories of analysing poems in school 😅

I got really lucky with my last German teacher (who mostly taught me about poetry interpretation), so it was a lot of fun and very insightful ^^

Oh, that's amazing! My last German teacher was great as well – made me so much more motivated for the subject. Unfortunately, she was sick for a few months while we were doing poetry interpretation. And I somehow didn't really warm up to Brecht's poetry :/
