How olds this author? It's like he took his childhood and tried to put it in modern day without changing any language or manner.

I work with kids, and modern kids, especially boys don't talk like this.

And the amount of bullying that happens uhhhhh this is going to sound weird, it's too physical. Not that that shit doesn't happen but it's quieter now, more private and 90% of the time happens online.

...these weirdly old fashioned kids in modern day are really becoming hard to read, a bit of a slog.

Edit: thought about it more. Another reason it feels Out Dated-ey. No one today would let an adult man take 6 preteens to an island, alone. 70s? Sure! Do whatever you want! Today that's like ... The biggest freaking child/teen care nono. Especially with the hot water the boys scouts were and have been in.
