I'm taking a break at about page 50 and I actually went back and found this line because I think it's a big example of my underlying struggle with this book so far.
I like the writing well enough, the characters are interesting. But.
I can't get over the fact that the author is a man. And maybe that's a personal failing but also lines like the one above don't resonate with me. Im a woman whose felt unsafe around a man. I know what that feels like. These lines do not resonate with those memories. They feel...Flat? somehow, like an actor reciting a line they don't feel to convey a plot point.
Maybe it's because I know it's a man writing or maybe it's genuinely lacking writing wise, but it's like a little itch in the back of my head while I read.
