When Susanna found Franny curled up on the settee in the parlor studying the album she immediately took it away. "It's for your own good," she said tenderly. "All I want for you is a normal life." "Mother," Franny sighed, "what makes you think that's what I want?"
Both Practical Magic and The Rules of Magic feature a mother who adamantly denies her family history/culture/magic in order to give her kids a "normal life", which in turn raises children destined to rebel and seek out magic for themselves OR leaves these children unprepared for the magical consequences they are destined to face. The cycle this creates is fascinating and it's the least "magical" aspect of this entire series because it's everywhere! Overprotective parent leads to rebellious child, rebellious child grows up to become hands-off parent, child of hands-off parent exposed to the dangers of an unprotected life and grows up to become an overprotective parent and around and around the cycle goes. It will be interesting to see how Susanna's kids specifically respond to this versus Sally's daughters, especially since we're going back in time and can see just how much of an influence the past generations had on the events in Practical Magic.
