Evie Sage☼ Princess Buttercup☽ Glorf (Tress)↑ I don't really know more than what I've already read, and some of what I read I'm not even sure I actually know.

I used to DEVOUR Wattpads as a teen, absolutely gorged myself on them, and I sometimes miss the feeling of reading something that’s kinda bad for you but is really good. Like eating a giant slice of chocolate cake. Is it the most nutritious choice? No. Do I sometimes want to be licking frosting off my fingers like I’m on my 40th day of Survivor? Yes! Reading Butcher & Blackbird is like that. It is basically a werewolf Wattpad but replace werewolf with serial killer. It’s not based in reality at all. Rowan is the classic alpha male, domineering, aggressive & mega horny for her! It’s indulgent, it’s decadent, it’s filthy. Sometimes I was wishing for a bite of a salad, something with more substance & depth but it’s great for what it is! I wish I could’ve read it in the throes of teenage hormones to really enjoy the experience.

It's difficult to pin down what I truly think about this book because I had such conflicting experiences. On the one hand I really enjoyed the way the story was presented, playing with timelines, mixed media, and perspectives in a way that helped keep the pace quick and my interest consistent. On the other, this didn't feel like a mystery you were intended to solve until the author was ready (though this could absolutely be caused by my interpretation of the translation or cultural barriers). The horror elements were incredibly intriguing and I think done really well. There is something so cruel and wonderful about the way this author creates ominous tension within seemingly normal and realistic scenes. That said, this felt more like watching a documentary about a horror story than actually experiencing the horror (again, not discounting interpretation/cultural barriers). All in all I completely understand the hype and know that my issues had nothing to do with the quality of the writing so that didn't influence my rating, but I'm curious if anyone felt the same.
