the only thing that gives him emotional reaction is the thought of his appeal succeeding -- quite an interesting attachment to living given his detachment to the actual events of life itself. he seems to be able to detach himself from this (by reminding himself that death is meaningless), and once he thinks about marie he's reminded of the meainglessness again -- it comes naturally. what is "natural" here for meursault... the detachment or is it all a veil for a deep desire to live?
