Caleb clearly wants to benefit from patriarchy without doing his part to maintain patriarchy. It’s the embodiment of “everyone suffers under patriarchy” - Caleb wants to have freedom and enjoy his inheritance, but in his traditional marriage he’s required to be a hard working, ambitious provider. If he’s not upholding his end of the bargain, Natalie will not only find him unattractive but will question her own role in patriarchy — why is she sacrificing her independence and ambition in this traditional dynamic when her husband is not? She has just enough awareness, ambition and self respect to recognize the hypocrisy, but not enough to avoid the trad trap entirely. I’m suspecting this is why she and her father in law become allies; she needs to become the man of the house while Caleb believes she’s the subordinate woman.
