Fuck, this is so sad. Luzia really believes that Hualit made it out, that she escaped and sailed away and is somewhere out there living a life far away from all of this. And meanwhile we know that she’s dead.
But at the same time, maybe it’s almost better that Luzia doesn’t know? She has already lost so much, and Hualit was the last person she had left of her family. There is something strangely comforting about Luzia getting to believe that at least Hualit escaped. That somewhere across the sea, she is still alive and free.
I don’t know, there’s just something so heartbreaking about Luzia carrying this completely false but hopeful version of Hualit’s ending with her. She doesn’t have her anymore either way, but at least she doesn’t have to grieve another person. And maybe believing Hualit got away is kinder than knowing the truth.
