Hello again Boundlings 👋
I have stumbled across an art installation called 🔗Future Library🔗 and wanted to see what my fellow Boundlings thought of this!
Please check out the link above for the full project, but here is the basic summary of what this project is per the website.
"One thousand trees have been planted in Nordmarka, a forest just outside Oslo, which will supply paper for a special anthology of books to be printed in one hundred years' time. Between now and then, one writer every year will contribute a text, with the writings held in trust, unpublished, until the year 2114. Tending the forest and ensuring its preservation for the one hundred year duration of the artwork finds a conceptual counterpoint in the invitation extended to each writer: to conceive and produce a work in the hope of finding a receptive reader in an unknown future."
I think this is super cool and have a ton of FOMO for the fact that I will never be able to read these books. However, it gives me a lot of hope to think there is a place that is thinking about the future 100 (88) years from now. It's a living time capsule that I think is very fascinating. I have seen some discourse on this subject though and wanted to gather your thoughts! Do you think this is a self important and selfish project? Or do you think this is a cool statement and hope to see it stand the test of time even though you are unlikely to ever read these books?
Edit to add: As I've pondered this my concern is how will the monetary aspect of these books be handled? This whole thing will make these books very valuable, and I can see that these books would immediately be purchased by the ultra wealthy, especially the physical copies since I imagine they will be very limited in their first edition production. And will they be released digitally? Basically will the general public get access to this project at some point or will it be like other art where it is over priced and hard to access by the public? 🤔
