Her Neighbor's Wife: A History of Lesbian Desire Within Marriage (Politics and Culture in Modern America)

An incredibly well researched and orchestrated dive into wives who developed relationships with other women from the 1950s to 1980s. It was fascinating to see the parallels to conversations and arguments that are still playing out to this day, including biphobia and the fluidity of family structures and sexual & romantic relationships. It’s at times a very dense academic read, but includes some illuminating (and heartbreaking) primary source material. I appreciated attempts to include diverse stories as well, though there definitely could have been more perspectives included. Highly recommend to anyone looking to learn more about feminine queer history.

I flew through this, the author did an excellent job on the audiobook and it really improved the experience with this book. I appreciate how candid the author was with their audience. I wish she had spoken a bit more about her privilege, it was really only mentioned the once. Other than that I thought this was really raw and paints sociopaths in a nuanced way. It should honestly be taught in psychology class.

I'll start with: unless you're a sociopath this book is not for you even though its for you to read.
Its interesting, witty, captivating and made me turn page after page. Its definitely something that we're all allowed to read, encouraged to read, are permitted to read. I'm sure the author and the publisher want the audience to be wide open.
And to some degree it is for everyone - its a titillating bit of voyeurism for all of us non psychopaths/sociopaths.
But after a while its clear that this book is for sociopaths a love letter to sociopaths. Its a raft, its a call into the forest, a hand in the darkness, an invitation to a team meeting. The rest of us get to be there for the ride, but it strikes me that she's baring her self for the people she feels most affinity with, the people she cares about most, the people she feels are most lost - her people.
There are some very disturbing parts, and parts that make you want to yell "CANT YOU SEE YOUR A HYPOCRITE??" and "OF COURSE THIS IS WHY PEOPLE ARE AFRAID" (is it me? probably just me).
There are at least two parts that are so disturbing I almost put the book down, but they are raw and honest
(btw the author is an unreliable narrator, but in often cases you can tell its intentional to demonstrate her journey of growth. At other times you will wonder if you're being told the truth or had your leg pulled. So in this case I'm not actually sure she ended with the cat situation where she did, and I can't know if she really was standing over that bed; but anything she held back or embellished still struck me as a form of honesty in that it was the most honest way she could say or show what she was trying to say or show.)
I do recommended it, as long as you take it with a grain of salt, and also understand, its not for you unless you're a sociopath.
Its for you if you're trying to understand, maybe if you have family members, and part of the book buying public. But its for the people she loves most.

i’m in my late teens and i’ve genuinely only heard the term “unalive” outside of tiktok a handful of times. i know the author states that he interviewed people about this and i believe it, but at the same time it’s so surprising to me because i thought this was only an online term
