I didn't hear of Octavia Butler until I was an adult (in the last few years really) but feel like she should've been introduced in high school English class! Curious how everyone else was first introduced to her work?

I absolutely loved this book. It's been months since I have read it and I hadn't rated nor reviewed it yet because I truly didn't even know what to say or where to start... I loved everything, from the characters, to the plot, to the writing style, to the stories told in between... Oh, I felt like I was LIVING on the island. I felt like I was part of the story. Truly a beautiful experience, and I wanna kiss Elif's golden hands. What a masterpiece. Really need to get my hands on her other books.

This is straight up so sexist already... And it being written by a woman blows my mind lol. I don't see myself giving any f*cks about this protagonist if that's how he talks about and treats women. Ew.

A butterfly island. Beautiful, eye-catching, adorned with a splendour of colours, trying to take off into the air and flutter freely across the Mediterranean, but weighed down, each time, by its wings encased in broken bones.
A beautifully written tragic story that tugged at my heart and made me feel a wave of emotions. I had really high expectations and it did not fail me. I loved every character and they all have a special place in my heart. I also loved the Fig Tree and learnt a lot about the plants and animals and how they’re heavily affected by the reckless decisions made by humans. The author takes historical events and blends them in so seamlessly with the story and i feel like it makes the story even more compelling. I however did not like the mention of ‘isreali’ culture as there is no such thing otherwise i think it would’ve been a 5 star.

I cannot be the only one that read some books as a kid that just....wow. Maybe we were too young, or too unsupervised, or just...why did adults think that was appropriate?????
I've been remembering a story off and on forever that I hadn't been able to find and I JUST remembered enough details to find them!
Did anyone else read The Angels trilogy by Lurlene McDaniel? Published in 1996 and wow did I get obsessed for at least a summer about cancer and illness.
🤦♀️
I also read "It" by Stephen King in middle school. 🤦♀️🤦♀️
And "Interview with A Vampire" shortly after "It". 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
What did you read when you were probably too young and did it stick with you?

I feel like I should be enjoying this book more but I'm just not... I feel bad for the author because she really tried but I feel like there's so much missing from the story and it lacks so many details and nuances... It feels like it should have been drawn out more, because it feels too rushed and like 6 different stories mixed into 1 and it's just so confusing and... idk. I truly, wholeheartedly believe this would have been able to rival The Priory of the Orange Tree IF it had been a trilogy, duology or at the very least, a thicker book. I am reading theories that there could be more books coming as sequels, but I feel like even then, THIS first book should have already been two parts or just LONGER lol.
