I think it may be time for my to give up Alex Aster. Last summer it was Holly Jackson and now this. Tsk. Tsk. I was sort of enjoying the first half of this book, minus the lack of actual chemistry between the leads, but I forgave it because the premise was write up my alley (hello current screenwriting student here). But oh my god was there issues with this book. The first, and main reason this book kept losing stars: Elle.
Elle was the most annoying female protagonist I have ever read. Her whole thing was that she didn’t like/trust Parker because he would buy her the world if he could. Honey that’s not an issue. When you have a billionaire boyfriend, who in their right mind would pass up them buying cool things for you. She was holier than thou in literally every aspect of her relationship with Parker. She was downright insufferable, like please get a grip. She was so bad she started to make Parker look crazy for liking her. Parker was another issue because why was he so obsessed with this girl. She wasn’t interesting whatsoever and she was so rude to him. Parker was literally painted at this perfect man and there is an issue with writing the perfect man as your love interest: it makes your protagonist unlikeable for the sheer fact that she doesn’t instantly fall in love with him.
Maybe I’m bitter because Elle is living my dream (job and man) and she literally doesn’t care. I know when I graduate film school I’m gonna be broke as hell, so you know damn well if a tech billionaire offered to fall in love with me and buy me everything I wanted, I sure as hell am gonna take him up on that offer, whether he’s hot or not. I didn’t hate her father enough to justify her actions and I don’t see how her situation with her mom would cause her to be such a stuck up bitch but either way, this story was a waste of time. (Also the movie seemed dumb too).
I was so bored through most of this book. I’d say Alex Aster should stick to fantasy but since my review for Skyshade is not much better than this one, maybe she shouldn’t.

okay i’m not being a hater but this book drove me insane. first the whole “enemies” aspect was based on a 5 min interaction years prior followed up by a lack of emotional connection between the characters at all, we barely learn that much about them!! unresolved issues that felt that they were just tossed in with her dad and sister and the fmc’s actions in general made you go…. why? also 18 months later (the end) wdym it took 18 months

Just wow! It was my first Freida Mcfadden book but she definitely got me hooked! As someone who is mostly a romance reader this was an amazing Segway into thrillers
