Whiny and self conscious millennial fiction. I cannot read about yet another directionless woman in an office job she feels is beneath her.

Arrrrrgh!! Read this in one sickening, breathless afternoon. Icky and delicious.

I mean you can certainly read this as a product of its timeâŠreading this and Huck Finn so I have context for James by Percival Everett.

Another Australian journalist turned crime novelist. Our main character being British made way for some gorgeous descriptions of the Australian landscape, which would have felt bizarre coming from a local. This did lean a little uncomfortably into various stereotypes, but it had its heart in the right place. An addictive read that, as pointed out by the author himself, owes almost everything to Wake in Fright.

If it were me I would simply not head into the Amazon with a group of random freaks I met on holiday. The writing style was a little too simple and the protagonist a little too annoying, but unfortunately I am a sucker for a survival story.
