This book left me feeling very mixed by the end of it. Honestly, this book was flying between 4-star to 2.5-star territory when I started thinking about it.
In this story, we follow modern man George who is so miserable with his life in the modern world. After an entanglement with the dogs he's walking, he falls through the earth and back to the past. Through this, he's forced to adapt to the old world where he faces love and looming threat.
One thing I need to warn readers about is George is DEEPLY unlikable through most of the book. He causes all of the problems that befall him and has complete control over his story. Something I appreciate but his whiny voice for 75%-80% of the novel is not for everyone. I could barely handle it at times.
Another thing I have to say is that I don't think the romance between George and Simon worked for me that well either. In my opinion, there was really a big summary of their time together then BOOM, undying love. So, I didn't really find it believable or cared about what would happen to them.
What I did find pretty interesting was this sort of commentary on choices, time, and how history and life have always been a big circle. It was all very intriguing and was all wrapped in a nice bow with the ending.
I know I seem to have more complaints than praises, but I do think this novel is worth picking up if you want a deeply messy, problematic queer main character, time shenanigans, and a classic fantastical story with a modern touch.
Final Score: 6/10
