“She is not my mistress. She is my betrothed.” Iktr Dantes

Very good nonfiction book reviewing the self defense movement and the disdain towards the women who practiced it. It also does a good job of discussing the sexism, classics, xenophobia, and racism of that time and how these issues intersected. Self defense was expected to be gently taught to white middle and upper class women, while POC or poor women were expected to kind of not. And even when women DID do self defense or any combat sport, they were sexualized and fetishized or treated as less than human because they were perceived as manly. This book read very academically, so it was a bit of a slog, but generally it was good!

I was recently at an antique shop and found a copy of Jane Eyre that was a special edition with art from Wood Engravings by Fritz Eichenberg for $10 and I had to grab it for my bookshelf. I know that it's a classic but other than that I'm truly going in blind as I have made it 41 years without knowing what it's about. I grabbed the free audio book on audible so I can listen to it and not mess up the antique. So far I love how it's written, but the English is so different that at times I need to really pay attention and translate it in my head. I did catch that there is a little jerk who twists the heads off of birds though. He sounds like a future serial killer.

⚡️ Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir — 4.5/5
Umm… amaze, amaze, amaze. I was honestly a little skeptical when I first started—mostly because of the writing style—but I got swept into the story so quickly. I haven’t read much sci-fi since the early 2010s, but this book absolutely encouraged me to take a closer look at the genre again.
There’s really very little I would change about this book. At its core, it’s a story about science, persistence, friendship, and hope. I loved the back-and-forth between timelines, and I loved how nerdy, blunt, and straightforward so many of the scientists are. The explanations of biology (especially microbiology and evolution) and physics were genuinely fun to read, not overwhelming.
And of course, the friendship between Rocky and Ryland Grace is the heart and highlight of the book. When I reached about the 20% mark and the general premise was revealed, I remember wondering what else there could possibly be—but there is always more than you expect. That’s because you can never quite predict where this story will take you.
There’s also thoughtful commentary throughout on academia, failure, bravery versus cowardice, climate change, and the ethics of removing individual agency to save a larger population.
All in all, I’ll be thinking about this engineer–scientist duo for a long time, and I really hope the movie coming out this year does the book justice.

Dramatic battles, tense political intrigue, unique world building...and is that maybe some romance I'm sensing? These books are not Romantasy but focus primarily on the SFF elements. Romance is a subplot and may not appear until later in the series, but when it does, you won't be disappointed.

An introduction to the Romantasy genre, these books are part of the cultural zeitgeist or the 'canon' that many would recognize. Look for more niche titles in later Starter Pack volumes.
