    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:
Fried Green Tomatoes is one of my all time favorite movies and I have been wanting to read the book for it for a long time.
I can say this is maybe the first instance where the movie is better than the book.
I don’t know how someone read this book and saw the potential for a movie to be made out of it…

This book was all over the place and hard to keep up with. We went back and forth through so many time periods and have way too many POVs and storylines that were unnecessary and added nothing to the plot or story.
We would bring up a plot line randomly and then totally forget about it until 20 chapters later where we focused on it more.

I had a problem with the character of Ninny and the language she used and thoughts that she had which seemed to emulate the authors own thoughts. Still using the word colored and n word for the 1980’s portion of the book? That seems like outdated language for the 80’s. Also actually saying the slurs for Japanese and Chinese people and using the derogatory term for little people and how she always wanted a little person to come and sit on her lap and play with him (wtf?). Saying how weird it is that “colored” people come in so many different shades. The author using the R word to describe Ninny’s mentally challenged son.

The character of Evelyn says that her alter ego, Towanda, wants to blow up the Middle East. Compares sexism to racism which should not be compared to each other as being the same at all. Saying she wished she was black and Ninny saying “oh, god why would you want to be black be glad the good lord made you white.”….:.

This whole book also seemed like Christian/Religious propaganda especially when it came to the character of Ninny and it got very old very quickly.

The writing at times seemed bad and not very well thought out or written. We often had to read things over twice. Ninny would tell part of the story to Evelyn and then we would have to hear that same part of the story again as it had happened in the next chapter. Often times the author rushed through big plot points of the story such as the trial of Big George and Idgie and Ruth, one of the main characters being diagnosed with cancer and dying. I also felt Ruth and Idgie’s relationship wasn’t explored as much as it should have been and I wish there was more scenes with them.

I wished I had liked this better but there were things I just couldn’t look away from.

  • Trialing community-voted Quests, inspired by Lists (3/18/2026)

Quests, created by Top Contributors, are such a labor of love, and there's so much time and effort put into research and curation. As Pagebound grows, we have been brainstorming sustainable ways to create more Quests that the community is eager to see. We're trialing a new idea for a community-voted Quest, inspired by a List.

    How this will work:

    1. Royalty members can nominate a List (their own or any community List) that would make a great starting point for a Quest. Royalty members will receive a notification tomorrow + an email with a link to a form to fill out by EOD March 31st to nominate. The form will include context about what makes for a great Quest.
    2. The entire Pagebound community will then vote on which nominated List will inspire a Quest. Everyone will receive a notification on April 1st with a link to vote.
    3. The creator of the winning List will be able to accept/reject.
    4. If they accept, we will create a Quest inspired by their List, adapting the title & book list if necessary to fit Quest guidelines (for example, if a List has 20 books, we will reduce it to 15 for a Side Quest; if a List includes all 7 books of a series, we would put book 1; all books from the Quest would come from the original List curation). In the Quest description, the List creator will be credited and their List linked. The resulting Quest could be either a Main or Side Quest, but it will not be open to book additions since there will not be anyone actively maintaining the book list (similar to when a Main Quest hits its 100 book cap and is closed to further additions).

We hope this idea will encourage quality List-making, give the entire community a voice in Quest creation in a sustainable way, acknowledge our Royalty supporters, and result in more diverse Quests. We think it can be a fun community-building activity! That said, we will see if this trial achieves those goals before deciding if and how often we'll repeat it.

Thanks for helping us trial and your open-minded participation! Jennifer & Lucy

This was a fun ride! Loved the world building & interesting plot to combine a dystopian/sci-fi with a marketplace & religion game system. I wasn’t expecting so much deeper commentary to come from what appeared to be more of a silly/light/fun kinda read but it’s so clever & has a great balance of humor, wit, & zany but still enough depth of characters that you get attached to without being overly depressing, extreme gore, or bogged down with stats. Can’t wait to check out the next book in the series!

Loved this & cant wait to see where it ends up with the next one! I didn’t know it was an unfinished series until after I’d already started this book or I’d have waited cause it’s going to be so hard to wait for the next book😩🤣

The premise sounded fun & I’m shocked there’s so many good reviews, it made me realize I need to check out reviews on other platforms because I just can’t understand what anyone read that made it worth 1 star let alone 5?! I DNF’d at 35% and that was as pushing far past what I should’ve. The plot is all over the place, the characters are all over the place, nothing is entertaining, there’s nothing major developing between characters, it’s boring & seems like a satire fan fiction more than anything.

A fun series with a lot of action, cool world & game/magic system without being overly detailed or complex with the stats. The characters are all unique individuals who love each other as much as they love to banter & give each other a hard time which makes for great entertainment but also not just surface level development. It’s not a deep read in any sense which makes it perfect when you’re looking for something quick, light hearted, & silly but still want some plot & excitement!
