Jamie is nineteen years old. He finished school three years ago, has no job, no training, no friends, and no prospects. He only leaves his room to grab something to eat from the kitchen, he barely even goes to the bathroom anymore. Whenever he tries to leave the house, he has panic attacks. His best friends are his Playstation and Lee, the teenager he always plays online games with. His mother is a single parent who left Jamieâs violent father years ago. Now sheâs caught between her son, whoâs slipping further and further away from her, her mother, and the demands of her job.
Everything changes when Jamie and Lee meet Seb, an American living in London who introduces them to the incel culture.
This book was in every bookshop when we were in Edinburgh earlier this year, and it immediately caught my attention. I finally bought it, and now I definitely want to read more by this author! Chris McQueerâs storytelling completely drew me in. The story is told in alternating chapters by Jamie and his mother, Fiona. Quite unexpectedly, it was Fionaâs story that moved me the most. Jamieâs journey, meanwhile, shows how he slowly drifts into the incel world, and that was⊠intense. If youâve watched the series "Adolescence" and want to explore the topic further, this might be something for you. It really got under my skin.

Five insomniacs meet at a cemetery at night to smoke. One evening, they notice something strange: There is a fresh grave in this graveyard that hasnât been used in a hundred years. The group decides to investigate.
I loved the characters, the mystery, and especially the atmosphere. The novella format fits the story perfectly, itâs the ideal book for a stormy autumn night.
Oh, and the playlist at the end of the book is great!

I am really enjoying this so far! A great group of people, just the right amount of creepiness, and an intriguing mystery.
