I found this rather enjoyable and interesting. The main character was so dry and funny, but also very clever and a bit melancholy. I quite enjoyed the twists as well. The reading was dense but well suited for the type of story and characters. I now recognize that crime novels aren’t particularly my genre however, I can’t deny the quality of this one.

So far, the writing is very dense. I don’t know if that’s good or bad. Though I’ve been enjoying that style of writing lately. What I will say is that I’ve never understood people’s care or aversion to short or long chapters until now. With the writing being so unique, I’ve found myself looking for places to take breaks and with the first chapter being 36 pages, there are very few to be had. Also, I haven’t been the biggest fan of detective novels but I have this far attributed the feeling to not enjoying the writing. If I find myself not liking this one, I think I’ll have to seriously just consider that the genre isn’t for me because the writing is actually very good.

I couldn’t get into Lauren. She just seemed like an airhead. There was nothing particularly special about her that seemed worthy of being obsessed about. Being inside her head became annoying about 1/3 of the way through the book. The flip flopping got on my nerves. I hated how she acted like she had no agency over what she did with Junior physically. It was a weird contradiction seeing as she was supposed to be a sw advocate. She also claimed to be a brat, but there’s very little indication of that besides her claim. I also couldn’t get over how childish Taylor was written. There are definitely parts of the book I found to be fun but overall, this was just ok.

So far, I feel let down with the plot and the writing. It’s not bad by any means. But it’s just not good, if that makes sense. Maybe it’s because I’m coming straight off of what I would currently claim as the best book I’ve ever read into this silly kinda dark romance novel but this doesn’t feel as fun as Lights Out. I feel like it’s hard to get invested in the characters. And some of the dialogue feels borderline cringy. I’m enjoying Junior, but every other character lacks appeal. They don’t need to be deep, just more interesting.

If I could give it 6 stars, I would. The way my heart was torn apart and gently put back together again was so unexpected. I’m completely undone. The writing was spectacular. The story is so painfully romantic. I appreciated the battle between nature and technology. The banter, the yearning, the humor, the vulnerability 😩 Did I mention the yearning? There’s no other book I’ve come across that compares to this. Oh, to be loved. I fear I’ll never get over this book. An absolute masterpiece.
