"War eats the victors last."
Solid read. A very good continuation of the story of Darrow and his motley crew of Howler pals, making choices that are for the betterment of society....or is it? Soft spoilers after the break
It was nice to revisit the world of Darrow and the rest of the Red Rising gang. I was a bit hesitant to keep going with the series. I thought that the ending of the trilogy was a bit ambiguous, but that it left everything open to hope that things were going to get better and the colors could live together in peace. This book showed that that was not the case. The proud Golds could not leave things be and Darrow is still fighting this war of Ares ten years later. Now a hardered man of 33, he still fights in this endless cycle of violence and peace. Throughout this novel Darrow fights for what he feels is right, but at what cost? What seems like losing his best friend, possibly forever. To the "death" of his, and maybe more, children, Darrow is played for a fool. I did like how this book has several different POVs, and most of them are important to the story and are not all of the same events. I like a story that weaves different views into the novel and it adds to the story, and is not just some dumb fluff that doesn't add to anything and just seems there to aid in the increase in the author's word count. All in all, a solid novel and a good addition to the Red Rising series.
