  • Pls help me pick my next ‘weather appropriate’ read🥺

Hey guys! After last weekend’s insane heatwave, the weather seems to have cooled down significantly starting from today (at around 20-22C or 68-72F), so I also wanted to read something that’s better suited for this kind of weather :D I am, however, very indecisive, so I thought I’d ask this lovely community for help✨💞 Here are the books I can’t choose from:

    • r f kuang: babel
    • r f kuang: katabasis
    • suzanne collins: the ballad of songbirds and snakes Thank you for your input in advance and have a lovely day/night, wherever you are! ^-^

  • The New Age of Sexism: How the AI Revolution is Reinventing Misogyny
    Thoughts from 8% (page 24)

The fact that 74% of deepfake pornography consumers say they don't feel guilty about viewing the content is devastating. I can't comprehend how people can have so little empathy and be so self centered. Is that because the Internet made us feel detached from seeing it's content as real? Or the phenomenon of feeling anonymous behind their screen? I really wonder how people come to the conclusion that this is ok. If anyone has ideas, feel free to share.

  • The New Age of Sexism: How the AI Revolution is Reinventing Misogyny
    Thoughts from 17% (page 53)

Right now the topic of child abuse images created by AI out of photographes of real children came up in the book. To me it's shocking that so many influencers keep on posting their children on social media KNOWING that this is something people can and will do. So many of them have so often been told that it is always dangerous to post your children online, but they only react defensively and push away their responsibilities.

Yes it is disgusting and wrong that people creat these kind of pictures and videos of children and that shouldn't be so easily done and instead be easier to punish. Still it is the responsibilitie of the adults to make sure your child can't be a victim of this and influencers that still post their children should be held accountable!

Was allerdings tatsächlich passiert: Verrätselung.

🇬🇧 This is perfect if you feel like you've given up on hope or you're indifferent given the negativity in the news. The book shows why that's not the way to go and how it is very serious. It's also probably great as an intro to similar literature. Neubauer takes scientific and historical facts and philosophical ideas to reflect on hope, courage, and the opposite.

This is not for you if you want to learn more about the topics in a scientific sense. Neubauer rather presents a different approach that will get you to reflect on yourself and society. She questions whether we need more information. We don't, because we didn't fail at communicating knowledge, we fail at something Neubauer calls "Fossilität", meaning fossil superiority.

She contextualises the already familiar topics and gives a bit of hope while being intelligent, funny and clear. This is what stayed in mind:

There is a comfortable hope and an uncomfortable one. We should want to achieve the latter.

If we're indifferent and jaded, it means we're passive. And that does not lead to change. We should instead find our way back to humanity and look closely. Therefore we cannot avoid being uncomfortable.

But what actually happens is we straighten out our reality to not be irritated by it. Life is full of dissonance though. We need to be able to endure it.
