I would enjoy this book much more if the identity of the twins' father were removed from the equation entirely (or if the author leaned into the incest rumours, but I'm biased on that front). Also, Dessa's 'redemption arc' was completely unnecessary. And for the love of god, cut some of the bullshit around Joy. However, my biggest issue is that the book can't decide on a genre. There were two ways to make it great, and Wally Lamb took so long to choose one that he ended up writing 900 pages and fumbling both. It could've been a solid contemporary fiction (a genre it mostly stays true to, until it doesn't) or a magical realism novel, or a New England gothic (does this exist?). It's neither, and the ending is so hopelessly half-assed I don't even want to extend grace on account of the excellent prose and amazing first 57% of the book.

I’m sad that the Fish Speakers have been in their prime for just one book
