My least favorite Lovecraft story so far. It had none of the unfathomable horrors that I love about his other stories. The last paragraph was sufficiently scary which is why I gave this two stars instead of one.

Dan Simmons really knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat for long periods of time. Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion were long too and I just couldn’t put them down either when I read them. Maybe it could’ve been a little shorter but there wasn’t much I could call filler. Simmons went on to write some pretty conservative nonsense later in his career but this book is quite the opposite. Pretty much every antagonist fits into some kind of right wing archetypes and the heroes tend to fit into left wing archetypes for the most part. All the characters are well written and the villains really got under my skin. Classic vampires are not nearly as scary as the more realistic, institutional power-wielding mind vampires of Carrion Comfort.

This is an underrated Lovecraft story! Hazel Heald’s contributions kept Lovecraft’s purple prose in check a little
