The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin is probably one of the best books l've ever read. The entire series was beyond my expectations…..it's a masterpiece. It's an SFF post-apocalyptic dystopian (but don't let that stop you from reading this!).

The author weaves the dynamics of motherhood, friendship, love, survival, oppression and systemic violence, so beautifully. The heavy world-building is phenomenal in its complexity, and the writing is so rich, tense and immersive. It's amazing, but amazing sounds so inadequate to describe it. The characters are complex, so incredibly well-written, realistic, painful and so raw. The character development was incredible. Nassun and Essun's conflicted and complicated relationship was so heartbreaking 😭. Many times throughout the book, ! wondered, ”what's happening? It doesn't make sense?", but it eventually all comes together, and starts to make sense in the most surprising ways. The author did an incredible job crafting this world and characters - each character had an important role.

This entire trilogy was an heartbreaking and emotionally intense rollercoaster, motherhood and oppression at the center of it all. And many of these themes in the book is relatable to what's happening in the world presently, and I think it's an important and thought-provoking reminder!
