If I could only use one word to describe this book it would simply be "atmospheric". I went into this book with the knowledge that the main characters were the incredible daughters of characters I have known and loved most of my life. It makes one weary to engage in such a piece of media. The chances of disappointment higher than I would like to admit. This book did not disappoint. As a reader, I gravitate towards historical settings, the occult, fantasy and the like. This brings together those words very nicely in an alternative historical setting where the world of Bram Stoker's Dracula and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes meet, seamlessly woven together to create a captivating and engaging read. It kept me always curious to see more of the magic system and creatures of legend, tying together with mystery and thriller one would expect from reading detective fiction. Overall, an enjoyable read with characters I would love to see more from. Only thing I found lacking was the romance aspect of it. I went in with the expectation there would be a sapphic relationship, and there was very little of that. I do not mind, in fact I prefer it, when the relationship isn't the main focus of story, but I certainly craved more from this book. Not so much in terms of the characters coming together. I would have liked the yearning, jealousy and painful longing that you would expect from an book like this. There were merely glimpses of that and what could have been. It was a little disappointing, but not enough to ruin the overall wonderful experience of reading this book.
